” Front of the Class ” Film Review : Brad Cohen on Courage and Tenderness

“Front of the Class” takes viewers on an emotional rollercoaster ride as it tells the riveting true story of Brad Cohen, a man born with Tourette’s syndrome. As I watched his extraordinary journey on screen, I felt compelled to share my honest thoughts and the valuable lessons I learned.

Tourette syndrome is a common neuropsychiatric disorder that develops in childhood and is characterized by multiple motor tics and at least one vocal (articulation) tic, which was not well known at the time. Let me briefly introduce the film: Brad Cohen, a Tourette syndrome patient, is unwilling to be tortured by the disease and is determined to become a teacher. He overcomes prejudice, ignorance and fear and strives to realize his dream.

The film begins with Brad Cohen’s childhood. He rides his bike to school. As a child with Tourette syndrome, he is often bullied. His classmates constantly pick on him because he always makes noises, and they think Brad is just annoying others. Even his teacher thinks he makes noises because he wants to be the “clown” in class. Brad has an older brother named Jeff. Jeff is his inseparable person. Jeff and Brad would always run home together and spend quality time together. These early experiences, although full of frustrations, also planted the seeds of resilience and empathy in his heart.

At the beginning of the film, Brad, his parents, and the people around him have no idea that he has Tourette syndrome. The Cohen family does not understand Brad’s tics or see them as a problem, they think it’s just a phase for Brad or that he can control them, especially his father. As time goes by, Brad’s tics get worse, affecting his academic and social life, and eventually, after a few months, Brad is expelled from school, apparently because of his tics.

The moment he was forced to leave the classroom was a heavy blow to Brad, but it also became a turning point for him. His mother stayed by his side all the time. They looked for all the doctors in the town, but no one could be sure what disease Brad had. Facing an unknown future, Brad did not give up. With the support of his mother, he picked up his books again, studied hard, and was determined to become a teacher.

Brad studied hard to become a teacher. I remember he applied to different schools, but they all rejected him because of his twitching during the interview. His determination and passion to become the teacher he never had was touching. Eventually, Brad not only found a school to teach, but also found his partner in life – his partner Nancy Lazarus. They met through a social dating app, and I have to say, this is the only beautiful love story I have ever seen that was facilitated by a dating app. They decided to meet at a restaurant, and despite Brad’s quirks, they still loved each other deeply, and this relationship became a warm harbor in his difficult journey.

In this school, Brad had his own class and students. At first, some students laughed at him, but soon they liked him. He communicated with students very smoothly, and I have to say that this communication was excellent. He taught in a way that stimulated students’ interest in learning and made them enjoy it. Especially Heather, the most engaged and always happy student in the class, her presence made Brad’s teaching career more meaningful until she passed away due to illness, and the grief also reflected the deep affection between teachers and students.

Finally, all the efforts and persistence were rewarded at a ceremony: Brad won the “Best Teacher Award” and gave a touching speech. Before he finished his speech, he was interrupted by students raising their hands high in the audience – they ran up and told about the life-changing moments they had experienced with Mr. Cohen. This scene became the warmest climax of the whole film, witnessing Brad’s extraordinary trajectory.

Here are six valuable lessons I learned from the inspiring figure that is Brad Cohen:

Acceptance: Brad teaches us the importance of accepting ourselves, our quirks and all. Through his own experiences, he encourages people to embrace their differences, live fearlessly, and inspire a new generation to break social norms.

Determination and Courage: Despite facing prejudice, Brad’s resilience and strength shine through. His achievements are a testament to the power of determination and courage in overcoming challenges. His book, Front Lines of Class, further reveals strategies to combat discrimination and offers hope to those facing similar adversities.

Unconditional positive self-esteem: Brad’s mother played a vital role in his life, providing him with unconditional love and care, with no strings attached. Her nurturing parenting style, combined with Brad’s unwavering self-esteem, was a powerful force that enabled him to persevere in the face of ridicule and teasing.

Self-efficacy: Brad’s story emphasizes the importance of believing in yourself. It reminds us that self-efficacy can help us achieve our goals and overcome difficulties. As long as we have confidence in our abilities, no challenge is impossible.

Becoming a Changemaker: Having been shamed and abused, Brad is determined to become the teacher he never had as a child. He is committed to educating children with kindness and understanding in the hope of making a positive difference in their lives.

Redefining Normal: In a society that values perfection and conformism, Brad’s father initially sees his son’s condition as a problem that needs to be solved. However, the film challenges the idea that disability needs to be solved and emphasizes the importance of embracing individual uniqueness. It reinforces the idea that everyone, regardless of disability, deserves respect, acceptance, and the opportunity to pursue their dreams.

Front of Class brilliantly chronicles Brad Cohen’s incredible life journey, providing inspiration and unwavering support to those facing their own challenges. Brad’s character teaches us what it means to be a truly exceptional teacher, and touches the hearts of both those with and without disabilities.

I wholeheartedly recommend “Front of the Class” to anyone seeking a deeply emotional and memorable film that reminds us that triumphs can emerge from even the most difficult of situations, leaving audiences feeling empowered and inspired to embrace their own unique journeys.

All in all, Front of the Class is a powerful portrayal of Brad Cohen’s indomitable spirit, lighting the way for young people facing significant challenges. Born with Tourette’s Syndrome, Brad’s story stands as a beacon of hope, affirming the worth and dreams of every person, regardless of their disability. This film is a must-see for anyone seeking an uplifting and inspiring cinematic experience. Front of the Class (2008)

This biopic is really heartwarming. I’m sad to see so many people not paying attention to these kinds of movies because these are the ones we need more attention to. This movie is really inspiring and makes you aware of Tourette syndrome. All in all, this movie is great, really great.
